Please complete this by October 1st.

“At the heart of sociology is the recognition that social structures and forces… shape a person’s worldview, beliefs, values, expectations, sense of what is normal, and right and wrong. In doing so, social structures and forces shape our experiences, how we interact with other people, and ultimately, the trajectories and outcomes of our lives.”

First, read the following information carefully:

What is sociology?
https://www.geneseo.edu/sociology/about

Defining groups:
http://open.lib.umn.edu/sociology/chapter/6-1-social-groups/

Understanding perspective:
https://www.thoughtco.com/sociological-perspective-3026642

Now, journal about YOUR perspective.  Really think about it.  Make sure you consider and define your perspective before we begin addressing essential questions in Units 1 and 2.

As you begin thinking about your perspective and how it shapes your understanding of the world, consider the following aspects:

·      Social groups you identify with
·      Social groups you are identified with
·      Connections between you and the community you live in
·      Connections between you and communities you are affiliated with
·      Historical context: class structure, economy, culture, politics

Think about each bullet point and journal about them.  What understanding about yourself can you come to?

Then, classify each aspect as either “micro” or “macro”.

When you have discussions with people—including classmates—or reading just about any text, perspective is key to a fruitful discussion and/or your understanding of complex issues.
